All major storms that sweep through your community will leave some damaged fencing. Temporary fencing is always hit hard, mostly because it is not set in concrete footings or permanently fixed. Temporary fence panel systems are usually weighed down with sand bags placed at the base of the temporary fences. Typically, two sixty-pound sandbags every 12′.So what can a contractor do to better secure their temporary fence systems?

  • Do not attach large signage or screening on the fence if it was not intended to support these materials. Temporary fence panel systems with sandbags cannot support large signage. Install fence posts in the ground or double-up on your sand bags around areas where signage is going to be installed.
  • Ask your temporary fence contractor to maintain the system while installed. This may cost slightly more but it is more than worth it to prevent your system from being blown down one evening in a big storm.
  • Promptly notify your temporary fence contractor about any damage or downed materials. The contractor may charge a small fee for simply standing-up the materials. This is far less expensive than replacing panels and fabric that have been run-over, bent, or otherwise destroyed because this material was left scattered about the area.
  • Regularly check the anchoring sandbags. It is not uncommon over time for your sandbags to slide off of the stands or break open. Sandbags are very inexpensive, so many contractors request that the temporary fence contractor to leave a handful of sandbags for quick repairs that they can do themselves.
  • Be mindful of areas of your installation that are exposed to large open areas, at the crest of a hill or between two tall buildings. These kinds of areas are particularly susceptible to encountering strong gusts of wind. Ask your contractor to drive the posts if possible or add additional sand bags.

Try to avoid having a messy site. If you want one less thing to worry about, have the fence company maintain the panel system. Extreme weather conditions are often unpredictable. Out sourcing the task of maintaining these systems can save money in the long run and offer some much needed peace of mind.
